Sioux Falls Sports Authority selects new executive director

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Sioux Falls Sports Authority has hired Thomas Lee as its new executive director. Lee is currently the director of sports development for the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority/Visit Charlotte and will begin his duties with the Sports Authority later this month.

“I am thrilled to join this incredible community that supports its events to the fullest extent,” said Lee. “That commitment is what makes this position so appealing, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Lee has been with Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority/Visit Charlotte since 2012, leading the organization in recruitment of sporting events to the city, county and neighboring counties. He also coordinates sales, management, hospitality, marketing and event management.

Prior to joining Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority/Visit Charlotte, Lee was the director of tickets sales for the Charlotte Knights for six seasons and an area sales director of Acumed for three years. The Clarksburg, West Virginia, native earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and public relations from West Virginia University.

“The resume that Thomas has built during his time in Charlotte is an impressive one, and we are confident he will be able to continue the incredible momentum of the Sioux Falls Sports Authority,” said Kevin Lampe, board chairman of the Sports Authority. “His experience in a sports market like Charlotte is ideal, and we will lean on him to help bring more high profile events to our community.”

Lee becomes the fourth executive director of the Sioux Falls Sports Authority. He replaces Bryan Miller, who will become the assistant commissioner of championships and marketing for the Summit League.

“I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to serve as the executive director with the Sioux Falls Sports Authority during the past 2-plus years,” said Miller. “I want to thank the Sports Authority board, the countless volunteers and my staff for their support. I look forward to continuing my relationship with the Sports Authority with my new role with The Summit League.”

The Sioux Falls Sports Authority was formed in 2006 by community leaders to recruit major sporting events to the Sioux Falls area. The organization attracts international, national and regional sporting events by operating, leasing, enhancing or owning sports facilities in the Sioux Falls area. It is run by a board of directors made up of 15 community members and executive director.

The organization has attracted and managed events like the Summit League Basketball Championships and several NCAA Division II national championships as well as an NCAA Division I women’s basketball regional at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. It also annually runs the Sioux Falls Marathon and Half Marathon.
